Wedding Stress Reliever? Get Organized!

Thursday, May 6th, 2010

The easiest way to reduce stress when you’re planning your wedding is to get organized.

There are few things more frustrating when you’re working on your wedding than having to try to dig out contracts, proposals, fabric samples and brochures from the piles of paper and mail you may have strewn around your home or on a too-full desk.

With a quick trip to your office supply store you can easily become organized and greatly reduce the stress you may be feeling when planning a project as big as your wedding. An extra-large three ring binder and plastic sleeves to hold all of your important documents are great organizational tools. Use colorful dividers to arrange the major components of your planning: venue, attire, décor, gifts, honeymoon, transportation, and so forth.

You also can find binder accessories specifically designed to hold a calculator, pens and pencils, business cards, promotional CDs, calendars, address books, hole punch, stapler, photos, and other important items you’ll want to bring with you when shopping or meeting with vendors. To add a touch of fun and class, try to find accessories in your wedding colors.

To add additional ease to your organization, toss your binder and any other items that you are most likely to need for your appointments into binders and folders that fit into a distinctively-styled and monogrammed tote bag. You’ll be calm, cool, collected, organized and chic. And isn’t that the way you always want to look when you’re planning your wedding?

Wedding Planning – 5 Common Mistakes and How to Avoid Them

Wedding Planner Writing in Her Calendar

  1. Not Planning Enough Time
  2. Assume that everything will take you two to three times longer than you think. You’ll need a minimum of six months to a year or more to guarantee you have enough time to get everything done.

  3. Waiting to Set Your Guest List
  4. Your guest list should be the first thing that you decide. You may even want to set up your list in tiers – the “must attend” guests, the “it would be nice to invite” guests and the “if we have room and/or money” guests.

  5. Not Doing Your Homework
  6. Research how much things are going to cost. Since prices vary greatly by location, you may find that the prices quoted in magazines, even regional ones, are not realistic to what you will actually have to spend. Shop online and make phone calls to vendors to get approximate prices.

  7. Setting an Unrealistic Budget
  8. Depending on your vision, guest list, and overall budget, chances are excellent that you are going to have to make cuts in some places. Plan a detailed budget and try to stick to it. But if you spend more on one item, remember to cut on another so you don’t start off your marriage unnecessarily owing money.

  9. Not Being Flexible
  10. You’ve watched the wedding TV shows and clipped photos from bridal magazines, but if you aren’t flexible and realistic in your own plans with your allotted budget, you’re going to be disappointed. Bending your plans as necessary will make for a much happier wedding day.

5 Common Misconceptions about Needing a Wedding Planner

Friday, April 23rd, 2010

  1. You Need a Big Budget to Hire a Planner

Most professional wedding planners will work with any budget. In fact, the smaller your budget, the more you need a planner to help you stretch your money to its maximum.
  2. You Will Lose Control over Your Wedding Plans

Most planners will take your ideas and enhance them and then bring you several options that not only match your wishes but also your budget.
  3. My Venue Has an Onsite Wedding Coordinator

Most onsite wedding coordinators have the venue’s best interest in mind rather than yours. They may help coordinate what was listed in your wedding package, but they won’t likely be concerned or available to help with your other important wedding needs.
  4. I Want a DIY Wedding

It’s great if you’re crafty and have lots of time and many other helpers to make invitations, favors, and so forth but an experienced planner can show you where you can save money and may waste money on DIY projects. Plus, she likely has resources to allow you to buy your supplies wholesale or at greatly discounted prices.
  5. Wedding Planners are Expensive

Brides who have worked with a planner will tell you that the time and money the planner was able to save them because of vendor discounts and keeping them from making costly mistakes more than balanced out their fee.
