A Bridal Emergency Kit Can Save the Day

By Mary Brophy

You've planned your wedding. You've had all your dress fittings, and the flowers are set to be delivered on your special day. Have you pulled together something old, new, borrowed, and something blue? Now it's time to add "something you might just need!" What items can help get you through the day with every hair in place and a smile on your face? It's time to gather your bridal emergency kit!

Items You Will Need

There are some items that are obvious that you will want to bring, such as bobby pins, tissues, safety pines, hair spray, and an extra tube of lipstick. There are other things that you may not think of bringing – so make a list and check it twice. Remember, you're better off having it "just in case," than be without.

Wardrobe: Pack a sewing kit and threads that match your dress, your bridesmaids' dresses, and your groom's attire. Pack crazy glue, extra buttons, and clear nail polish (to fix pantyhose runs). On that note, bring an extra pair of pantyhose alone as well! Include spot remover and white chalk which can be used to tidy any last minute smudges on your gown. Rememer shoe polish, pins, scissors, and hem tape – just in case!

Beauty & Hygiene: Bring extra make-up and nail polish in the bride's colors, breath mints, dental floss, and a nail file. Eye drops, an extra hair brush, and a small mirror can all do wonders during the hectic day. Extra earring backs and suitable jewelry can also be included, just in case an earring is lost

Logistics: You never know what might happen on any day – especially on your wedding day. Arrive prepared. Bring extra cash and change (for meters), local cab phone numbers, and copies of contracts and vendor contact information. Tylenol and a few healthy snacks can also keep your emotions and nerves in check.

Tech, Tech!

In the rush of the big day, a bride may forget some things she would never normally leave the house without a cell phone, digital camera, and music pod may all be useful accessories. They don't take up much room and can calm you down, put you in touch, or capture a moment.

A Special Tote Bag for the Bride

To carry your items in your emergency kit, you may want a handbag you can easily bring to your ceremony and celebrations. Choose something with lots of room, something that matches your wedding colors, and that is hard to overlook. If you plan ahead, you may have your bag personalized with your name or initials on a wedding tote to make it extra special.

Choose something with lots of pockets to make finding whatever you need even easier. Some brides may even wish to use a small carry-on style suitcase which you can pull along on wheels. Your Maid of Honor or Wedding Planner may agree to be responsible for putting this kit together and bringing it along on the big day.

Check Your List

Make your list a few weeks before your wedding date and collect the items in one place so your emergency kit is ready as you rush out the door on your wedding day. Talk to other brides about what they wish they would have brought on their wedding day — it can be a time saver and makes it more likely that you cover the basics. You may come up with some items you never would have thought of on your own. If you don't have the time, but have some extra funds, besides your bridal tote, consider purchasing a packaged kit — except be sure its personalized with a few of your special necessities. Relax and enjoy the day — and if any glitch does come up, you've got your emergency kit to smooth the way.
